Get Straight to The Source!
Let’s face it, nobody appreciates the smell of a stuffy, dank space, but if you’re continually spraying it over with conventional air-fresheners, you’re only masking the problem.
The fact is, all smells have a source.
Whether you’re in a crawl space or in the kitchen, start by checking carefully for the origin of the scent you’re looking to eliminate. Often, during garbage or compost removal, small foodstuffs can fall into hard to see cracks and create odour issues.
Also, in the case of basement odours, water issues can quickly lead to heavy, musty smells. If this is the case, you should consider investigating for mold, after consulting a professional (as mold can be highly hazardous and toxic if not handled correctly!)
Whatever the source of smell, your task is to identify it, eliminate it, and make sure there’s nothing left to linger!
Luckily, Nature has given us a few incredible tools for the job.
Vinegar and fresh lemon!
Time to put Nature to Work!
Vinegar and lemon are both time tested odour eliminators, due primarily to their potency as anti-bacterial, anti-fungal and anti-mold agents.
They work especially well on cutting boards, kicthen counters, cupboards, floors and smooth surfaces throughout the home (bathrooms included!)
We’ve also had a great deal of luck removing both stains and odours from the synthetic and natural fibres present in all living spaces (even automobile interior fabrics!)
A good rule of thumb is to allow vinegar and/or lemon juice solutions to sit on the suspected area for a few minutes for maximum effectiveness.
Once you’re done with a thorough soak & wipedown of the affected area, it’s time to make sure there’s nothing hanging around in the air!
Don’t Mask – Absorb!
Rather than moving from clean to spray, as conventional freshener manufacturers would have you do, we recommend you turn to another trusted and time-tested natural ingredient – Baking Soda (otherwise known as Sodium Bicarbonate) – to eliminate airborne odors.
How does Baking Soda work? It reacts with the acidic or strongly basic chemicals that we tend to associate with bad smells, binding them and neutralizing them.
Be sure to hold baking soda in a container that exposes as much of the powder to the air as possible, as the surface area may crust over when moistened (losing it’s effectiveness).
Essential Oils – Nature’s Perfume!
When it comes to leaving a natural, fresh scent in your home, it’s hard to look past natural essential oils – especially favourites like Eucalyptus, Clove, Lavender and Jasmine.
However, unless you’re using a diffuser, the effects of isolated oils tend to be short lived.
In our experience, turning to an old-fashioned hanging Orange & clove freshener works best, owing to their natural essential oil content that emits over time!
To make one, simply grab an orange and a handful of dried cloves. Using the pointy end of the cloves, press them into the perimeter of the orange (like a pin-cushion). Then, take your orange and either hang it, or sit it, somewhere in the space you’re looking to freshen.
The results will last for weeks!
